Public Security Ministry Secretary Viyani Gunathilaka told the Daily Mirror that the police and the Special Task Force (STF) will lead security efforts during the election period. The tri-forces are also on standby to support the police if needed.
When asked whether a curfew would be imposed after voting on September 21, Gunathilaka said that there are no preparations for a curfew.
He said that the decision to impose a curfew rests solely with the President.
He said they have given the necessary instructions regarding presidential election security.
He noted that more than 500 election rallies have been held across the country so far without any major incidents.
He added that the police will continue with their efforts to ensure a free and fair election.
