Govt to provide Rs. 11 billion in subsidies to paddy farmers to buy fertilizer Featured

Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera says the government’s attention has been focused on providing a financial subsidy to the farmers who are cultivating paddy during the Yala season.

This subsidy is to be given especially with the aim of reducing the production costs of the farmers.

Minister Amaraweera also mentioned that accordingly, the President as the Minister of Finance has decided to give an amount of 20,000 rupees for one hectare of paddy cultivation and 40,000 rupees for two hectares.

The government has to spend 11 billion rupees for this subsidy. About 550,000 farmers who cultivate paddy in the Yala season are entitled to this subsidy.

The mud fertilizer required for the Yala season has already been given free of cost to the farmers. The Ministry of Agriculture has focused on reducing the price of a bag of urea fertilizer to 10,000 rupees and reducing the price of a bag of Muriate of Potash (MOP) or Bandi Fertilizer by 4500 rupees from the current price.
