SL Ports Authority handles 1.54 million TEU amid regional competition Featured

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has addressed recent concerns regarding a perceived decline in transshipment volumes at the Port of Colombo, which some attribute to the expansion of regional ports in India.

The SLPA reported a substantial increase in activity, handling 1.54 million TEU, which marks a 16 percent rise compared to the 1.32 million TEU processed during the same timeframe last year.

Overall, the Colombo Port experienced a growth of 9.6 percent, reaching a total of 5.02 million TEU in 2024, compared to 4.58 million TEU the previous year.

The authority, along with all terminal operators at the Port of Colombo, acknowledges the benefits of neighboring port expansions, which can help meet the evolving demands of the market collectively.

In a positive turn, the Colombo Port has shown impressive growth in container handling for 2024, indicating a significant improvement in operational performance.
